Mott MacDonald engineers jet hangar in Singapore

A state-of-the-art business jet maintenance hangar at Seletar Aerospace Park in Singapore - where Mott MacDonald acted as engineer on the project for Singapore architects Liu and Wo Architects Pte Ltd - has now officially opened.

Gregory Cox, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said: “This project is a great example of building information modelling cross-collaboration between Mott MacDonald and Liu and Wo Architects Pte Ltd.

"Our team in Singapore received technical support from the UK for fire protection, while our North American infrastructure operation Hatch Mott MacDonald carried out a peer review of the design.”

Built by Aircraft Support Industries Pty Ltd., the new hangar triples the size of the Jet Aviation Singapore’s existing capacity from 2500 sq. m. to 7500 sq. m. It is designed to safely and efficiently meet the maintenance requirements for Boeing, Bombardier, Gulfstream and Nextant business aircraft. It also includes 4,060 sq. m. of office space and interior refurbishment, avionics, tire and battery shops.

The hangar’s design includes a proprietary stressed arch system that has created an internal clear span of 100m. High strength steel stressing tendons and pre-stressing jacks pulled the arch into shape, raising the hangar roof in a matter of hours. Fire suppression foam deluge systems and lighting were assembled within the structural frame. This construction method proved safer and faster than working at height.
