BMT brings industry support to MoD's BATCIS

Through its specialist companies, BMT Hi-Q Sigma Limited and BMT Defence Services Limited, BMT Group Ltd (BMT) has successfully delivered a programme of technical support to the UK Ministry of Defence's (MoD) Bowman and Tactical Communications and Information Systems (BATCIS) Delivery Team (DT).

Leading a consortium, BMT supported the BATCIS team within the Pre-Assessment Phase of the Land Environment Tactical Communications and Information Systems (LE TacCIS) programme which could provide the next generation of tactical communications to the UK Armed Forces. BMT has helped the BATCIS team to improve their understanding of the end user requirements, which will assist the DT in establishing robust programme management methods and processes to take the project to the next stage.

Andy Howard, C4ISTAR business development manager at BMT Hi-Q Sigma said: “We have been providing focused technical support to the LE TacCIS project team, assisting the MOD in preparing for the next stage, the Assessment Phase.  Specifically, the consortium delivered an assessment framework which allows different business models and high level technical designs to be assessed, including identification of risks and opportunities. We also provided an assessment of Portfolio, Programme and Project Management (P3M) – the objective of which was to determine the optimal mix and sequencing of the LE TacCIS project to achieve the desired capability. Finally, we helped to refine the user requirements and compile them into the documentation that the BATCIS team would need to submit to achieve the necessary approval and proceed to the next stage of the project.”

Other members of the consortium included Roke Manor Research Ltd and QinetiQ, with both companies helping to develop and validate the Assessment Framework for the new capability, and SEA Ltd which helped BATCIS define the user requirements and build them into a MOD approved format.

David Bright, managing director at BMT Hi-Q Sigma said: “This project demonstrates how bringing together some of the key industry players can support UK Defence in their quest to deliver new capability to our Armed Forces.  This project also gave us the chance to draw upon the Requirements Engineering skills and expertise of our sister company, BMT Defence Services.”
