Babcock awarded submarine CESM contract

Babcock has been awarded a four year contract by the UK MoD to provide in-service support for the submarine Communications Electronic Support Measures (CESM) system, Eddystone, operating on Trafalgar class submarines.

Under the contract Babcock will provide post-design services and in-service support for Eddystone and the supporting shore infrastructure. This includes a range of technical services including engineering support, integrated logistics support, obsolescence management, configuration management, helpdesk, stores management, and ensuring fully functional capability on the in-service platforms.

In delivering these services Babcock will provide flexible, cost-effective, availability-focused support to the highest standards, drawing on its leading expertise and capability in this field and experience from having delivered CESM support on surface ships and submarines for nearly 15 years.

Babcock is also the system design authority for Eddystone, having led the design, integration and installation as prime contractor under a previous competitively won procurement contract.

Babcock and its US technology partner Argon ST continue to work closely with the MoD and Royal Navy to ensure full capability delivery at the front line. In 2012 Babcock was contracted to undertake a mid-life software update to Eddystone, introducing enhanced system functionality and addressing hardware obsolescence issues, thus ensuring improvement and sustainment of the important operational capability to the platform Out of Service Date (OSD).

Babcock Integrated Systems & Support Group director Charles John commented: “The Eddystone system remains at the forefront of CESM capability and this contract award demonstrates confidence in Babcock’s ability to support this key capability, delivering a very high system availability with the systems performing well while on mission. This together with our Type 23 Hammerhead CESM system underline our increasing capability to deliver and meet the customer’s requirements as a one stop shop.”
