Cambridge Airport continues to expand

2013 has got off to a flying start in Britain's fastest growing city, Cambridge, as the management team of Cambridge Airport continues the long term growth strategy that was begun last year. New developments already unveiled this year include two recently announced destinations, surging advance bookings for existing flights and a newly completed £1m terminal upgrade, which opened on Saturday, 11th May.

Last week, tour operator Inghams announced the launch of its first ever winter ski and summer programme departing from the East England airport, with new weekly flights to Geneva commencing from December 2013.  The tour operator also confirmed weekly flights from Cambridge to Milan Malpensa and Geneva appearing in its Lakes & Mountains programme for summer 2014.

These new flights and holiday packages will complement Cambridge’s existing Italian programme with Newmarket Holidays and scheduled summer service by Blue Islands to Jersey, which begins its second season on 11th May 2013. Forward bookings for the 2013 Jersey flights are exceeding all expectations, according to Jersey tour operator CI Travel, with booked passenger numbers up 75%.

The airport has also significantly enhanced its customer experience for 2013: the newly completed terminal refurbishment featuring a new check-in lobby and passenger security area, exclusive hotel-style departure facilities such as the JETability business lounge and new food retail area, complimentary Wi-Fi and lounge-style seating throughout – the terminal is a key stage in Cambridge Airport’s ongoing development.

David Surley, Head of Business & Route Development, commented, “The city of Cambridge is leading the UK’s economic re-growth and the airport plays a key role in that. Independent research shows that, in terms of domestic and international air travel, the Cambridge region has seen annual growth of 20% or more to major European business centres and a 32% increase in inbound business visits.  The world’s 5th largest bio-pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca recently announced a new World Headquarters to be located in Cambridge – this is a truly exciting time for the city of Cambridge and the airport is completely in tune with this economic buoyancy.”
