Cranfield University powers-up new Supercomputer

A new High Performance Computer (HPC) has been switched on at Cranfield this week - called Delta - which is faster, provides greater storage capacity and is more energy-efficient than its predecessor.

Delta is planned as a dedicated resource for research teams to investigate engineering, scientific, data analytic and machine learning applications. The academic supercomputer will be used for predictive modelling and simulation tasks.

Supporting 250-300 users, it will reduce the time taken to perform complex research by carrying out calculations across many processors simultaneously.

Gio Lusignani, Cranfield’s Director of Information Services, said: “As a world-leading University dedicated to research excellence, we are ensuring that researchers and students continue to have the best possible computer resources available to them. The new HPC will offer outstanding research capabilities on existing and future projects.”

The new HPC is three times more powerful than its predecessor, has double the amount of storage and uses only two-thirds the energy of the previous system. In addition, it has remote visualisation to provide the opportunity to view research findings from remote locations without the need to relocate data.

This is a further step in the development of the University’s research computing capability. An additional system dedicated to teaching requirements, will be launched with the same software later this year providing an enhanced service for students.
