Frazer-Nash to develop Medic of the Future concept for MoD

Engineering consultancy Frazer-Nash has been selected by the Ministry of Defence's (MoD) Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to progress their concept for a new working platform for the medic of the future.

The consultancy has identified potential concepts for a system called MedicMat with the aim of being used in medical evacuation to transport injured service personnel and civilians.

The MedicMat will allow casualties to be evacuated in quick succession without concerns of cross-contamination from the previous casualty. It will also reduce the risks associated with infection from the general dust and dirt found in the harsh environments that UK forces operate in.

Tim Andrews, Business Manager at Frazer-Nash said, “We are in the initial stages of designing the MedicMat and are looking forward to progressing this project, and plan to have a full prototype in place by the end of May 2014. Initially, we see this concept being used in air evacuation, but in the future could be used more widely on any medical evacuation platform, including ships and ambulances.”

Frazer-Nash created the concept following a call from Dstl’s Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) for proof-of-concept research proposals that would reach out to all sectors for new solutions and new technologies that can support the military medic of the future. The MedicMat specifically addressed two of the challenges set out in the call for innovations that will help reduce the burden on Medics and maximise force effectiveness.
