NATS reaccredited in Responsible Business Award for Continuous Descent campaign

NATS has been reaccredited in the 2016 Responsible Business Awards for its work in continuing to demonstrate the positive effects of a campaign for Continuous Descent Operations.

NATS was initially recognised in the 2015 awards under the category ‘Engaging Customers on Sustainability’ for leading Sustainable Aviation’s Continuous Descent campaign. The aim of the campaign was to increase the number of Continuous Descent Operations (CDO) being delivered across the UK. A CDO is an aircraft descent technique that reduces noise, fuel burn and emissions.

The UK’s leading air traffic management company was reaccredited as a responsible business for showcasing innovation and best practice of this programme and the continual positive impact it has had in the last 12 months.

Comparing 2014 with 2015 CDO performance there was an improvement from 77.8% to 78.0%. The total annual saving for 2015 was 190 tonnes per year of fuel and 604 tonnes per year of CO2 emissions. The best performing airports during 2015 showed on average a 6.5% increase in CDOs compared to 2014. This included Heathrow, Gatwick and Bristol.

Ian Jopson, Head of Environmental and Community Affairs, said: “It is an accolade to be reaccredited in the Responsible Business Awards for the collaborative work we are doing with airlines and airports to increase Continuous Descent Operations and to be recognised for the tangible benefits that the campaign is delivering in reducing CO2 and noise.”

The 2016 Responsible Business Awards, are run by Business in the Community, HRH The Prince of Wales’ Responsible Business Network, and celebrate businesses that are making a significant difference by taking action to improve their local communities, create more inclusive workplaces and tackle environmental challenges.

The announcement of the 2016 Responsible Business Awards re-accreditations coincided with Responsible Business Week (18-22 April 2016), an annual initiative to increase awareness of the positive contribution of business in society.

Stephen Howard, Chief Executive, Business in the Community, said: “We know that every day businesses contribute towards more resilient communities, stimulate local economies, help to create skilled and healthy workforces and tackle environmental challenges. Celebrating their achievements and stories helps to raise awareness of business as a powerful force for good, which is why were delighted to be able to reaccredit NATS for the work it has done on noise reduction and through its Continuous Descent campaign.”

NATS will receive a certificate of its reaccreditation at an award ceremony reception on 11 July at the O2 in London.
