Recruitment drive underway for apprentices at Portsmouth naval base

The evenings are being organised by existing apprentices who will be on-hand to explain what life is like as an employee and provide an insight into the design, engineering and project management opportunities available.
Young people considering the next step in their career are invited to visit the Apprentice Open Evenings which will be held at Action Stations, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 January 2015 between 4pm and 8pm. The events are designed to showcase the three schemes available: engineering technician apprenticeship, craft apprenticeship and a new higher apprenticeship in project management and new recruits can expect to be involved in world-class engineering projects, gain comprehensive training and top qualifications - whilst earning a competitive salary. Along with job-specific skills, apprentices can expect to learn vital workplace skills including communications, financial management and teamwork.
Gary Morrison, a second year Engineering Technican Apprentice at BAE Systems said: “I am excited to be part of the team organising the Apprenticeship Open Evenings. For me an apprenticeship is the best way to learn, and I want to encourage others to learn about what an apprenticeship can offer you – both in your career, and personally. It is the combination of formal learning with workplace challenges which offers a great foundation to establish a rewarding career in engineering.”
Nick Sibley, Engineering Director of Maritime Services and former apprentice added: “We are experiencing an increase in interest from young people wanting to acquire skills whilst earning a competitive salary. Our investment in apprentices is an important part of our future skills strategy and this record recruitment campaign really reflects the importance of these roles in our business.
The Maritime Services business, based in Portsmouth, delivers maritime services and support to over fifty per cent of the Royal Navy's Surface Fleet. Following the recent announcement of a five year £600M contract to support the Portsmouth Naval Base estate, the business anticipates that to service the Royal Navy’s future needs, the apprentice intake will need to double over the next five years.
In total BAE Systems in the UK is recruiting over 700 apprentices in 2015, the highest intake in the Company’s history. The new recruits will get the chance to support the Royal Navy’s future warships, such as the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers and the Type 26 Global Combat Ships.
