Should the Galileo satellite navigation system be mandatory?

In 2010, the Commission adopted an action plan for Galileo and EGNOS applications with an Impact Assessment. The Commission's questionnaire seeks views on the progress made by the action plan and sets out options for the future which include new EU regulations to make the use of Galileo mandatory, either for some specific purposes or for every sat nav device marketed in Europe.
The Commission is seeking views on these proposals by 14 July 2014. A public consultation workshop on the applications of EU satellite navigation programmes Galileo and EGNOS will be organised on 4 June 2013 in Brussels (details to be given).
