Spain's Navantia using Paramarine in development of naval ships and submarines

Paramarine software - developed by QinetiQ GRC - is being used by Spain's Navantia to support the development of both new naval surface ships and submarines, specifically for stability calculations on vessels such as new frigates, patrol boats and corvettes.

Navantia employs over 5,500 staff and is Spain’s leading naval military technology company offering a wide range of products and services. These include the design, construction and manufacturing of hi-tech military and civil vessels, control and combat systems, the overhaul and alteration of military and civil vessels and diesel engine and turbine manufacturing. Navantia’s main customer is the Spanish Navy but also has extensive overseas activity with presence in Australia, India and Venezuela.

“We wanted to extend our marine design capabilities through the acquisition of additional vessel design software. We selected Paramarine not only because of its functionality and track record but also its ability to handle both submarines and surface vessels particular with regard to early stage design work. We are very pleased with what it has delivered for us to date and plan to expand its use to exploit its extensive functionality over the coming years,” said Sebastian Abril, Head of Naval Platforms Department, Navantia.

Paramarine is based on over 20 years’ experience in marine design. Thousands of concept vessels have been modelled and their stability analysed using Paramarine. Paramarine is used by many of the world’s leading shipbuilders and ship designers, as well as some of the world’s leading universities including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University College London. The launch of the latest version of Paramarine has further extended and enhanced the software’s functionality with enhancements to its reporting, concurrent design and documentation capabilities.

“We are very pleased to be working with Navantia who join a growing list of global naval constructors of surface ships and submarines using Paramarine including BAE Systems and DCNS. We are committed to an extensive product improvement programme to ensure that Paramarine expands and develops its functionality based on the very latest technology to support our growing customer base,” said Vittorio Vagliani, Managing Director, QinetiQ GRC.
