UK aerospace to gain up to £160bn from record orders

New data from aerospace trade organisation ADS Group reveals the global aircraft order backlog has reached a new record following a bumper number of orders throughout August.

The backlog, which now stands at 12,113 aircraft and 21,128 engines, could be worth up to £160bn to the UK, offering valuable long-term stability and a strong base for industry and the supply chain to invest in further capability and capacity.

What the backlog means – supply chain opportunities in numbers:

·         Around 24m engine blades, about double the number of iPhones in use in the UK today

·         Up to 2.6m aircraft seats, enough to fill 28 Wembley Stadiums

·         Around 650 miles of emergency floorpath lighting, equivalent to the entire length of the UK

In response to new demand, industry is focused on increasing production and deliveries, with the latest figures reporting a year-to-date increase in deliveries of five per cent compared to the same period last year.

Paul Everitt (right), chief executive of aerospace trade organisation, ADS Group commented: “The UK is home to 3,000 aerospace companies across all regions and of all sizes. UK industry has a global reputation for specialising in the design, development and manufacture of a broad range of parts, including wings, engines, passenger seating, landing gear, cabin lighting systems and much more. A close look at any aircraft will reveal a significant proportion of UK-produced components.

“This latest data signals the strength of the sector. We estimate that the current backlog could equate to more than nine years work in hand for the aerospace sector, giving industry the confidence to focus on the long-term picture; investing in skills and R&D to develop the technologies of tomorrow.”

By 2032 it is estimated that more than 29,000 new large civil airliners, 24,000 business jets, 5,800 regional aircraft and 40,000 helicopters will be required.

The UK specialises in the development and manufacture of some of the most complicated and high tech parts of modern aircraft, so this requirement means a potential market share of around $600bn for the UK. To maximise the opportunity, industry is working closely with government through the Aerospace Growth Partnership to implement a strategy to encourage Research and Technology, accelerate innovation, drive exports and support the supply chain.
