New Stansted Airport College welcomes 250th trainee

The brand-new Stansted Airport College is celebrating its 250th confirmed trainee, as construction work on the site intensifies ahead of the planned opening this September.

Scarlet Jemmett (above), currently a pupil at Leventhorpe in Sawbridgeworth, has been accepted onto the Hospitality & Events Management course following the latest round of interviews held this week (Tuesday 8 May).

Scarlet said: “I heard about the new college from chatting to friends – at least five of my friends are also coming here. Lots of people were talking about it at school, so I came to the Open Event in April and thought it was a really good college. I’m really excited by the thought of studying Hospitality & Events Management. I would love to eventually work in that industry where no two days are the same. Being the 250th trainee feels special – I’m really looking forward to starting now.”

Trainees who have been offered places will be travelling from places as far afield as Enfield in North London and Chelmsford in Essex. They will have access to a generous travel card scheme currently offered to London Stansted Airport staff which offers discounts of up to 80 per cent on bus, coach and rail travel.

The College, which is a partnership between Harlow College and London Stansted Airport, is due to open in September 2018, with the next Open Evening taking place on Wednesday 20 June.

Karen Spencer, Principal and CEO of Harlow College, said: “The support for our new College at Stansted Airport has been phenomenal, from key employers, to schools, to young people and their parents. This is a really exciting initiative that truly brings together education and employment to create sustainable careers pathways. As the fastest growing airport in the UK, Stansted is a great place to be.”

Ken O’Toole, CEO of London Stansted, said: “I’m delighted that Stansted Airport College has already recruited 250 trainees. The new college will help London Stansted Airport access the skills we need as a rapidly growing airport, generating even more local employment opportunities for our young people while helping to address the growing skills gap in engineering, hospitality and customer service across our region.”
