ESUK delivers advanced firing training to British Army

The platform, which is used to provide synthetic training to the British Army on the 81mm Mortar and 105mm Light Gun, is a new breed of synthetic trainer that blends real-life actions with the synthetic world – delivering game changing training capacity and capability to the Forces.

Over the past two years, ESUK has developed a synthetic platform that works with a surrogate gun. Following the successful IOC testing, ESUK has now delivered three of the 105mm Light Gun trainers to both the Combined Arms Manoeuvre School (CAMS) and the Royal School of Artillery (RSA). All of these systems will be used by the British Army for immediate training. 

The IIDFS platform provides a significant enhancement to artillery and mortar training, reducing the need for live firing. Using IIDFS’ simulated ammunition allows soldiers to train more often, for longer and at lower cost. By enabling unlimited virtual rounds without ranges, live ammo, or barrel wear, IIDFS delivers safer, smarter training – backed by digital after-action insights to sharpen future performance.

With Full Operating Capability expected later in 2025, ESUK is working on integrating IIDFS with other training platforms and will deliver the remaining 105mm Light Gun and 81mm Mortar systems to CAMS, RSA and the Collective Training Group. ESUK training teams will also play an integral role in training personnel over the coming year, with the team delivering 46 weeks of training.
