SSTL racks up smart storage solution

As UK electronics manufacturers move beyond traditional X-ray counting towards integrated solutions combining goods-in scanning with intelligent storage, smart racking is emerging as a key enabler of next-generation traceability and production control.

Reflecting this shift a distributor of capital equipment for the electronics manufacturing industry, Altus Group, has supported Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) with the implementation of a Scienscope Smart Rack system to further enhance component traceability and production efficiency.

Enhanced traceability

A specialist in small satellite design and manufacture, SSTL continues to invest in advanced manufacturing technologies to support its growing international operations. As part of its ongoing development, SSTL identified an opportunity to build on its materials management processes, enhancing traceability while improving changeover efficiency and product set-up times.

Having previously engaged with Altus at technology events, the SSTL team was already familiar with Scienscope Smart Rack technology. Following evaluation, a Scienscope Smart Rack (WH-SR2-COMBO Gen 3), aligned with the latest third-generation platform, was integrated. The system features improved build quality, next-generation reel sensors, upgraded LED signalling for multi-kitting and adjustable reel thickness capability.

Hardware demonstrations confirmed performance, while close collaboration between SSTL, Altus and Scienscope ensured software integration was tailored to site requirements prior to investment.

Compact smart storage

The selected configuration was a two-metre smart rack designed to support high volumes of seven-inch reels, providing a compact and efficient storage solution.

The Smart Rack provides automatic reel detection, placement and removal tracking, alongside multi-colour LED guidance for multi-kitting. Each component is assigned a unique ID, enabling full traceability and structured FIFO/FEFO retrieval, with ERP and MES integration supporting real-time data capture.
