Apex Europe: Delivering defence innovation at the speed of the frontline

Nick Waite is Product Director at Clarion Defence & Security. He has spent a decade working in defence and technology events, across formats ranging from large-scale conferences and exhibitions to intimate one-to-one programmes. Having started in platform-focused events, he now leads the Apex brand: Apex Defense in Washington D.C., entering its third year, and Apex Europe, launching in London this October.

Taking place 7-8th October at Magazine, London, this year will see the first iteration of Apex Europe, which will put defence technology and innovation requirements at the heart of its packed programme. Product Director Nick Waite reflects on the upcoming show and its focus areas as well as the wider defence landscape.

As technology accelerates and operational environments become increasingly complex, the ability to innovate at pace and translate ideas into deployable capability has become critical to sustaining strategic advantage. Few areas illustrate this more clearly than drones and autonomous systems, demonstrated by how war is being waged in Ukraine. The future of defence is about the ability to identify problems and develop solutions to meet urgent operational requirements, delivering capability at the speed demanded by the frontline.

For the UK and NATO partners, drone readiness is now a strategic priority. It means being ready to defend, ready to build, and ready to capitalise on one of the most significant technological and industrial opportunities of the coming decades.

The defence innovation cycle must change

Recent conflicts have demonstrated that affordable, adaptable, and rapidly deployable unmanned systems can have a decisive impact on operations. The lessons being learned are clear: forces need technology that can be delivered faster, adapted quicker, and integrated more effectively. The traditional cycle of capability development must evolve to match the realities faced by those operating in complex environments.

This requires a new approach to defence innovation and events. We need to bring together military users, industry, academia, and government to solve real operational challenges. Innovation must be informed by those on the frontline and focused on delivering practical solutions that improve capability, resilience, and effectiveness.

Turning collaboration into capability

For NATO allies, collaboration is central to this effort. The challenges faced by one nation are increasingly shared across the alliance, whether that is countering emerging threats, strengthening supply chains, improving situational awareness, or developing scalable autonomous technologies. By working together, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities for interoperability, NATO partners can accelerate the development and adoption of capabilities that strengthen collective security.

There is also a significant economic opportunity in the urgent requirement for more drones and uncrewed systems. The growth of the drone sector will create opportunities beyond defence, supporting applications across infrastructure, logistics, emergency response, and commercial markets. By investing in innovation today, the UK can strengthen national resilience while establishing itself as a global leader in unmanned systems.

Drone readiness will be a major focus at Apex Europe, which will bring together operational leaders, acquisition executives, startups, scale-ups, investors, and key industry to problem-solve operational challenges which address the pacing threats facing European and Allied Commands. During the event, participants will have the opportunity to hear from not only MOD Senior Leadership such as the Vice Chief of Defence Staff, General Dame Sharon Nesmith DCB ADC and the Director of the Uncrewed Systems Centre, Brigadier Stu Nasse, but also a full host of subject matter experts across the services and industry.

The success of defence innovation will depend on our ability to collaborate, adapt, and deliver solutions that meet the needs of those operating today while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow.

The future of defence and the events industry which supports it will belong to those who can identify problems and can innovate fast to meet urgent operational requirements. Drone readiness is a critical part of ensuring NATO is prepared to lead in this area.
