Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2026: What to expect as RAF takes centre stage

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is underway at Edinburgh Castle, with more than 800 performers and RAF flypasts featuring in the 2026 show.

Bringing together stories through music, dance, poetry, spoken word and imagery, a cast of over 800 UK and international performers will present ‘Stories’ through vivid and eclectic range of expression. The Tattoo will host performers from Norway, The United States, Australia, Trinidad and Tobago and Switzerland alongside acts from across the Uk and Ireland. The military will take a prominent role in the show with the Royal Air Force being the lead service this year.

More than 800 military musicians, dancers and performers have gathered beneath Edinburgh Castle for the 2026 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The Royal Air Force will perform several flypasts in this year’s spectacle.

The Tattoo’s 2026 production, A Call to Gather, runs on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade from 7 to 29 August. It brings together military units and cultural performers from the UK and around the world for one of the biggest events of Edinburgh’s festival season.

This year’s theme takes inspiration from Scotland’s historic gathering of the clans, with a gathering of “nations, allies, friends and kindred spirits”.

For aviation and military enthusiasts, the RAF’s role is particularly significant. The service is the Tattoo’s Lead Service for 2026, putting RAF musicians and personnel at the heart of the 90-minute production.

RAF leads the Edinburgh Tattoo in 2026

RAF musicians feature throughout A Call to Gather, including the Royal Air Force Pipes and Drums.

The Tattoo’s traditional Scottish performers will also return, with bagpipes, Highland drumming, fiddles and Highland dancing. The Massed Pipes and Drums and the Lone Piper are among the show’s signature elements.

Although the RAF is this year’s lead service, personnel from the British Army are also taking part. Army pipers and drummers will join those forming the Tattoo’s Massed Pipes and Drums.

The international line-up includes the German Army Band Koblenz, New Zealand Army Band, Qatar Police Academy Band and Drill Team and United States Army Field Band.

The US Army Field Band’s appearance has a special significance in 2026. The United States marks the 250th anniversary of its independence, and the US Army marks 250 years since its establishment. The band is performing throughout the Tattoo’s 7-29 August run.

RAF flypasts planned over Edinburgh Castle

Aircraft will also take part on selected evenings.

The Tattoo has confirmed five RAF flyover dates with four remaining during the 2026 programme:

  • Tuesday 18 August
  • Friday 21 August
  • Tuesday 25 August
  • Friday 28 August
  • A flyover was also scheduled during the 18:15 performance on Saturday 15 August.

The remaining flyovers are evening performances, scheduled for the 9:30pm show.

Organisers have not identified the aircraft scheduled for each flypast on their public FAQ. The Red Arrows were originally scheduled on August 15, but had to cancel their appearance amid delays returning from the US.

Past RAF-led Tattoos have included some of the service’s best-known aircraft. When the RAF was the Lead Service in 2023, flypasts included the Eurofighter Typhoon, the Airbus A400M Atlas and the Red Arrows.

More than 800 performers gather in Edinburgh

This year’s Tattoo brings together more than 800 performers from around the world. Each performance is staged before an audience of around 8,800 people on the castle esplanade.

The production combines the Tattoo’s familiar military precision with a more theatrical approach. Organisers promise music, dance and precision displays alongside poetry and cinematic storytelling.

Modern production technology has also become an important part of the event. Projections alongside pyrotechnics, lasers, smoke and haze effects and strobe lighting enhance the 2026 performances.

Creative Director Alan Lane said ahead of opening night that performers and audiences would come from around the world to Edinburgh for “a celebration of the music, dance and performance”.

The international contingent is central to the A Call to Gather concept, combining Scottish military traditions with performers representing different armed forces and cultures.

When is the Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2026?

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo continues until Saturday 29 August 2026.

Most Monday-to-Friday performances begin at 21:30, while selected Friday and Saturday dates also have an earlier 18:15 performance. Each show lasts approximately 90 minutes.

The darker 21:30 performances provide a stronger backdrop for the show’s projections and lighting. Earlier performances can offer better views of costumes and formations.

The Tattoo has been staged at Edinburgh Castle since 1950 and remains one of Scotland’s best-known international cultural events.
