GKN Aerospace and Saab have signed a long-term collaboration agreement covering the Gripen E/F propulsion system.

The agreement gives GKN Aerospace a broader role as engine partner within the Gripen E/F programme and expands cooperation between the two companies.

Through the agreement, GKN Aerospace becomes Saab’s preferred provider of engine services related to Gripen E/F. The collaboration covers propulsion support, capability development and contributions to Saab’s international Gripen campaigns.

Sara Eklöf, SVP Governmental Solutions – defence and space, GKN Aerospace, said: “Gripen is one of the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft systems.

“This agreement strengthens our collaboration with Saab and expands GKN Aerospace’s role in supporting the long-term development of the Gripen E/F propulsion system.”

How development of a stronger industrial partnership opens up market opportunities

The agreement defines how Saab and GKN Aerospace will work together on engine and propulsion-related activities within the Gripen E/F programme. It is intended to further strengthen the Gripen E/F offering for both Sweden and international customers.

Johan Segertoft, Head of Gripen Business Unit at Saab, said: “Gripen is built on strong industrial partnerships. By deepening our collaboration with GKN Aerospace, we strengthen the conditions for continued development, high availability for our customers and a competitive offering in the global market.”

GKN Aerospace already plays a key role in Gripen engine maintenance and technical support activities in Sweden. The new agreement broadens the collaboration to include long-term capability development and expanded customer support activities for current and future Gripen operators.

GKN Aerospace is the type certificate holder for the RM12 engine powering the Gripen C/D fleet. Saab and GKN Aerospace will also continue discussions on strengthening long-term Swedish capability related to the Gripen E/F engine.
