Discover Airlines sets sights on UK expansion

Discover Airlines, the Lufthansa Group’s leisure carrier, is expanding into the UK, adding Bristol, Glasgow and Inverness to its network from summer 2027.

Founded in 2021 as Eurowings Discover, the airline currently flies from Frankfurt and Munich to destinations across the Mediterranean, Africa, the US, the Caribbean and the Nordics.

From May 2027 it will operate Bristol–Frankfurt twice weekly (Mondays and Thursdays), Glasgow–Frankfurt six times weekly, plus a twice-weekly Glasgow–Munich summer link. Inverness–Frankfurt will follow, starting as a once-weekly Saturday service running 19 June to 11 September 2027.

Discover Airlines CCO Marco Gotz said Bristol is the airline’s first English destination and a “perfect fit” given rising demand for trips combining culture, nature and the outdoors. As Discover’s first Scottish destination, Glasgow offers a gateway to Scotland, which offers abundant space and outdoor opportunities. The Inverness route will open up the Highlands to Frankfurt, with onward connections available to 150 destinations via Lufthansa’s hub.

All new UK routes will use A320 aircraft with roughly two-hour flight times, bringing Discover’s total weekly UK services to 11. The three new UK routes follow the airline’s April 2026 launch of flights to Shannon, Ireland.

Why Discover’s UK expansion matters

The UK expansion fills a notable gap: despite being one of Europe’s largest outbound travel markets, the UK had not been served by Discover since the airline launched in 2021. In addition, the carrier will be the only operator offering direct Frankfurt links to Glasgow, Bristol and Inverness, giving it first-mover advantage on each route.

The new services will also feed connecting traffic through Frankfurt and Munich into the wider Lufthansa Group network. And while the Munich–Glasgow route isn’t new – Discover is taking over this route from Lufthansa itself – the move suggests the group is shifting more cost-efficient, leisure-focused short- and medium-haul flying to Discover rather than using full-service aircraft.

Wider network growth

The UK additions are part of a broader expansion push in 2026. Frankfurt–Bodo (northern Norway) launched in May after its February announcement. March brought Shannon, Brindisi (Italy) and Larnaca (Cyprus) to the summer 2026 schedule. This winter, Discover adds two Moroccan routes – Frankfurt–Agadir and Munich–Fez. The latter is the only direct link between those cities. The carrier is also introducing increased capacity from Frankfurt to the Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius, and more frequent Munich–Punta Cana flights this winter.

From April 2027, the airline will boost its Munich–Windhoek (Namibia) service to year-round with two extra weekly frequencies, flown on A330-300s that will progressively receive Discover’s new “Ocean Blue” cabin from 2027. Earlier in August, the airline also announced two seasonal Finnish destinations: Savonlinna in summer and Kajaani in winter.

Fleet-wise, Discover currently operates around 30 A320s on short- and medium-haul routes plus A330-300s and A330-200s on long-haul routes, with delivery of the first of four Airbus A350-900s expected in mid-2027.
