Naval applications of SSS Clutch demoed at DSEI

During DSEI 2025, SSS Clutches is demonstrating the naval applications of the SSS Clutch in hybrid and Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) systems.

SSS Clutches, a UK manufacturer of synchro-self-shifting clutch technology, is working with international navies to assess the use of the SSS Clutch in hybrid and Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) power systems on naval vessels.

On display at the ADS Pavilion during DSEI 2025, the SSS Clutch can be installed between a prime mover (engine or turbine) and a generator, allowing the existing generator to operate as both a motor and a flywheel. Installation of the SSS Clutch ensures greater electrical stability to a ship’s grid, an approach already proven in land-based systems worldwide to improve fault current and reduce RoCoF.

The growing adoption of DEWs such as lasers, railguns, and electromagnetic launch systems within naval vessels is increasing the demand for higher power density and faster recharge rates. Without a stable electrical system, these charging and discharging cycles can cause RoCoF events that risk tripping critical systems offline. To mitigate this, stakeholders of the UK and US navies have begun to integrate standalone flywheels into experimental laser systems.

In land-based systems, similar challenges have been addressed by adding an SSS Clutch to a gas turbine or to a diesel and gas engine-driven generator, enabling the system to function as a combined generator-motor flywheel. Applying the same approach to a navy vessel generator would improve fault current and slow RoCoF, as has already been demonstrated on land.

Nicholas Bellamy, Applications Manager at SSS Clutches, said: "We’re delighted to be at DSEI 2025, showcasing our world-class innovation in synchro-self-shifting clutch technology, which we at SSS have been a leader in for over 70 years.

“Our flywheel concept has already provided reliable solutions for armed forces globally for over a decade and we are now working with stakeholders to assess its application in the maritime domain. Throughout 2025, we will be publishing technical white papers and engaging with partners to support reliable power supply solutions for navies worldwide.”
