UK airport reliability ranked: Heathrow leads globally while Manchester is near the bottom

London Heathrow tops the list of most reliable major airports in a new study by AirAdvisor. Manchester ranked second from the bottom. Other British airports ranked below the top 10 in Europe and North America.

The AirAdvisor Airport Ranking 2026 assessed 23 European and North American airports popular with UK and US travellers. It weighed six factors to give each airport a score, with higher scores reflecting better performance. They included punctuality, passenger satisfaction, transfer costs, shopping experience and Skytrax ratings. The company sourced full-year 2025 Eurocontrol operational data to measure on-time performance and more than 1.1 million passenger reviews on Google to evaluate overall passenger satisfaction.

How UK airports ranked

Five UK airports featured in the rankings, with Heathrow emerging as the leader among all the airports studied.

The results show a significant performance gap between Heathrow and the rest of the UK’s largest airports. Heathrow was the only British airport to make the top 10. Manchester finished 21st out of 23 airports.

Heathrow stands apart

Heathrow achieved a high score despite handling 84.5 million passengers in 2025, the highest passenger volume of any airport in the study.

The airport recorded an on-time departure rate of 79.1%, with nearly four out of five flights departing as scheduled.

Its strong operational performance, combined with high passenger ratings, helped it outperform airports including Dublin, Rome Fiumicino and Amsterdam Schiphol.

Edinburgh is the UK’s second-most reliable airport

Edinburgh was the UK’s second-highest ranked airport, placing 14th globally.

It finished ahead of both London Gatwick and London Stansted, making it the highest-ranked airport outside southeast England.

Gatwick placed 15th globally, just behind Edinburgh, while Stansted ranked 17th.

The results suggest that travellers flying from London can expect different experiences depending on which airport they choose.

Manchester struggles

Manchester Airport recorded the weakest performance of any UK airport in the study, ranking 21st out of 23 airports, ahead of only Paris Charles de Gaulle and Nice Côte d’Azur.

AirAdvisor recommended passengers travelling through lower-ranked airports should allow extra time, particularly when making onward connections or travelling on tight schedules.

Punctuality and reviews drive the rankings

Punctuality accounted for 40% of each airport’s score, as did passenger reviews on Google.

The on-time performance (OTP) of the UK’s airports varied as follows:

• London Heathrow ranked third among all airports studied for OTP
• London Stansted ranked eighth overall for OTP and second among UK airports
• Edinburgh Airport ranked below Stansted for OTP in ninth place, and third place among UK airports
• London Gatwick ranked in 11th place for OTP overall, fourth place in the UK
• Manchester Airport ranked in 20th place for OTP, among the three least reliable airports in Europe and North America

“For passengers flying out of the north of England, it’s a result worth factoring into summer travel plans, particularly for time-sensitive connections,” AirAdvisor notes in its announcement.

Across all 23 airports, the average on-time departure rate was 74%.

Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor, said airports with persistent delays tend to face long-term operational constraints.

“Airports that run chronically late do so for structural reasons,” he said. “Capacity limits, ground handling bottlenecks, the way turnaround schedules are built at a specific terminal: none of these fix themselves between summers. Years of claim data show the same airports at the bottom. Passengers booking through them are not getting that information.”

What the rankings mean for UK travellers

The AirAdvisor study suggests airport choice can impact the quality of the journey, even within the UK. Heathrow’s first-place finish stands in sharp contrast with the lower rankings of Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester. It suggests that operational performance varies widely among the country’s busiest airports.

For passengers, the rankings provide a guide to the risk of delays before they book. These insights can be useful for itineraries involving connecting flights or time-sensitive travel.
