Cranfield Airport is seeking to attract more business aviation flights with a rebrand to London Cranfield Airport and a partnership with Weston Aviation.

The Bedfordshire airport has joined The Collection, a network of business aviation airports coordinated by Weston Aviation as it seeks to pivot towards more lucrative customers.

Building more business traffic at London Cranfield Airport

Cranfield Airport has until now provided a base for a small amount of business traffic as well as light, general aviation traffic and helicopters.

In a statement on the new partnership, the airport said it would combine Cranfield’s aviation heritage with Weston Aviation’s commercial expertise and its substantial business aviation network.

London Cranfield Airport, as it is now known, will gain access to Weston Aviation’s business development and charter sales teams with the aim of increasing awareness of the airport, which sits around 50 miles from London.

Cranfield will market the airport as in the “heart of England with exceptional accessibility to London, the Midlands and the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor”.

It is also close to the new Universal United Kingdom Resort, which is not expected to open until 2031.

London Cranfield Airport says new operators would benefit from an “efficient alternative” to the larger, more congested airports serving the London area.

Business aircraft have priority since there are no airlines to compete with, and the airport promises no delays for arriving or departing traffic.

There are further efficiencies to be gained from the border processes in place at Cranfield. For international flights, the airport uses remote customs and immigration processes, meaning documentation is submitted to the UK Border Force before the flight.

Long-term growth at the airport

Robert Abbott, airport director at London Cranfield Airport, said: “We have long recognised the airport’s potential as a leading business aviation destination, and this partnership provides us with the commercial expertise, market reach and collaborative approach needed to accelerate that ambition.”

Nick Weston, Weston Aviation’s CEO, added: “Cranfield has a rich aviation heritage, excellent infrastructure and enormous commercial potential. By combining our business development expertise with Cranfield’s vision, we are creating a partnership focused on long-term, sustainable growth.”

Since it was opened in the 1930s, Cranfield has built a reputation as a centre for training and research and development.

The College of Aeronautics, now Cranfield University, helped develop the Harrier Jump Jet and has pioneered research on everything from Digital Air Traffic Control Centres to UAV drone swarms.

The university is now entering a new chapter with a proposed merger with King’s College London, with the aim of bringing the two institutions together from August 2027.

As a specialist postgraduate university, Cranfield will benefit from the interdisciplinary breadth and scale of King’s.

King’s, in turn, will be strengthened by Cranfield’s world-renowned expertise in technology, engineering and management, alongside its deep and longstanding partnerships with industry and government.
