Aircraft manufacturing slowdown continues with worst November

ADS reported that there were 27 global commercial aircraft orders in November 2020, the highest number for a single month since March 2020 but still the lowest on record for November and a 91% decrease on this period in 2019.

Global deliveries of commercial aircraft deliveries reached 71 in November, slightly down on the previous month but still a significant rise the record lows seen in Q2 and Q3 this year. The substantial drop compared to delivery numbers over the last decade means this is the worst November for deliveries on record, with 29.7% fewer aircraft delivered than in November 2019.

The total backlog of aircraft orders has now declined to 13,212 aircraft, a 6.2 per cent decline on the same time last year when there were more than 14,000 on the order books. However, the still strong overall backlog of remaining orders will constitute several years’ production work for manufacturers.

ADS Chief Executive Paul Everitt said: “The UK aviation and aerospace industries face a deepening crisis. The latest travel bans, fragile consumer confidence and little success so far in achieving resilient travel protocols, leaves airlines, airports and aerospace manufacturers uncertain about future demand and the route to recovery.

“Urgent action is now required to prevent longer term damage to these valuable industries and the wider economic activity they facilitate.”
