Atkins and Gama Aviation complete RAF airworthiness reviews

Atkins and Gama Aviation have successfully completed Baseline Military Airworthiness Reviews on behalf of the Royal Air Force (RAF) within the deadline set by the Military Aviation Authority (MAA).

These comprehensive reviews will help the RAF to ensure that its aircraft are safe, airworthy and fit for deployment whenever they’re needed most.

The Military Airworthiness Review contract came about after the MAA issued the Airworthiness Review regulations in June 2013 and mandated a Baseline Military Airworthiness Review (BMAR) of all military aircraft by 1st July 2015.

The BMAR is used to confirm airworthiness by establishing an aircraft’s maintenance history and physical configuration. Completing this within 12 months of the contract being awarded was an extensive task which, for some aircraft, included thorough checks of records going back over 34 years.

Alan Buckland, market director of Atkins’ defence business said: “The successful completion of these reviews gives confidence to RAF aviation Duty Holders that the continuing airworthiness management activities for each aircraft have been carried out and documented correctly, allowing them to make informed judgements on air safety risk.”

Once the BMAR is completed, Atkins and Gama Aviation will conduct an annual Airworthiness Review on each allocated aircraft for the remainder of the three to five year contract that will focus on the continuing airworthiness management activities conducted on the aircraft since the last review.

Alan continued: “Over recent months our people received commendations for their work from senior members of the RAF, including the station commander of RAF Leeming. The team were recognised for their technical capability, thorough analysis and streamlining of existing processes.

“Completing these extensive airworthiness reviews while meeting and overcoming difficult challenges throughout the programme has only been possible by working in close partnership with the RAF. Together we have implemented a comprehensive and unprecedented review of Air Force assets within a stretching deadline. This will make a very real difference to the ongoing air safety of RAF aircraft, and I am incredibly proud of what our team has achieved.”
