Babcock accelerates future talent at Formula Student 2025

As a business underpinned by engineering and technology, Babcock became the official Artificial Intelligence partner for Formula Student taking place at the world famous Silverstone race track from 17th – 20th July.

The event is a unique chance for future engineers to develop essential skills like business planning and project management, while gaining valuable practical experience in real-world engineering environments. Over the weekend, budding engineers were able to showcase the racing cars they had built from scratch and the autonomous systems they had designed.

Neil Young, Global Engineering Capability Director, said: “Mentoring and working with next-generation talent in engineering and technology is a priority for Babcock. Ensuring we have the right skills, in the right place, at the right time, ensures we can deliver on critical defence programmes.

“Supporting events like Formula Student, is part of our approach to breaking down barriers to STEM and skills. Seeing the innovation, teamwork and passion from the young minds involved reaffirms the importance of investing in and supporting the engineers of tomorrow.”

This year, thousands of engineering undergraduates from across the globe will have participated in Formula Student and the Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) Challenge — two initiatives led by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Formula Student centres on the design, build and performance of single-seater race cars, while the UAS Challenge requires teams to develop an uncrewed aerial system from concept to completion, capable of meeting defined mission objectives.

Babcock support both events through their longstanding partnership with the IMechE, which allows Babcock to work side-by-side with students throughout the year, offering mentorship that allows them to gain real-world engineering experience.
