Esri UK supports The Queen's Diamond Jubilee beacons

Esri UK, a provider of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to UK defence and national security, has launched an online, interactive map to show the public the location of their nearest beacon being lit to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, on June 4th 2012.

A network of over 4,100 beacons will be lit between 22.00 and 22.30 BST, by communities and others throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, along with Commonwealth and UK Overseas Territories, on Monday, June 4th 2012.   The Queen will light the National Beacon in London at around 22.30 BST, the last beacon in the UK chain.

To find their nearest official beacon event, people can enter their postcode or town name in the search bar on the map; further help is on the web page.

The inclusion of the map was the brainchild of Jim Sibbald of Esri UK.   “While looking for my nearest beacon I came up with the idea of Esri UK assisting in displaying a map of the beacons.  I approached Bruno Peek OBE MVO OPR, pageantmaster, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons, with the idea of providing a full interactive map.  Bruno graciously signed off the proposal and we were able to have the map up and running prior to the official website launch, with the voluntary involvement of staff from our offices all over the UK,” he said.

“I am extremely delighted at the work that Jim and his team have undertaken to provide us with this unique map for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons and I applaud their efforts,” added Peek.

“It is an honour to support The Queen’s  Diamond Jubilee Beacons and we anticipate that many more people will be able to actively enjoy their local beacon ceremony, by easily finding out where to go or identify beacons that they will be able to see,” said Sibbald.
