Jez Lenman awarded H Rowbotham Memorial Award

Jeremy 'Jez' Lenman was recently presented with the 'H Rowbotham Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to human factors integration' at the Human Factors Integration (HFI) Symposium at Abbey Wood.

The annual 'H' award, now in its fifth year, celebrates individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the field of HFI. The judging panel comprised representatives from Cranfield University, DE&S, UKCeB and the MoD/Industry HFI Working Group and this year they sought nominations for individuals that had demonstrated skill in using HFI to deal with adversity.

Jez Lenman is an experienced Senior Human Factors consultant, with an academic background in Applied Psychology, who works at design, engineering and project management consultancy Atkins.

He received the accolade for his work on the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) AJAX Armoured Fighting Vehicles Programme. These new tracked vehicles will be fitted with state-of-the-art capabilities and systems that have never before been integrated into an armoured environment. As such, addressing HFI is essential to achieve a human-centric design that preserves the safety of the operators while maintaining the vehicles usability and ‘fightability’.

Simon Layton, Chief Human Factors Engineer at Atkins explained: “Jez has made an outstanding contribution to HFI through his extensive work on the Ajax Armoured Vehicle programme. He has demonstrated an unwavering ability to apply best practice HFI methodologies on a ‘Category A’ procurement programme. Alongside the pressures exerted by a time and cost-driven project, he has managed the requirements and challenges of both internal and external MoD stakeholders, as well as engaging confidently with the Prime Contractor.

“Jez has gone 'over and above' his standard working responsibilities to ensure that a robust HFI approach is being applied to the project. Ultimately, his efforts in 'pushing' and demonstrating the benefits of the HFI approach have meant that Human Factors is now seen as a valuable and core discipline within the project team, and is viewed on an equal footing with other engineering disciplines.”

Jez received his award from Air Vice Marshal Quigley, Director Technical at the UK’s Defence Equipment and Support organisation.

Air Vice-Marshal Quigley said: “I was delighted to present this award, which recognised not only Jez’s considerable expertise in Human Factors Integration, but his exemplary commitment to the Ajax programme and his close, co-operative working with the stakeholders to achieve a better outcome for the British Army.”
