The team were awarded Highly Commended in the 'Net Zero and Resource Efficiency' category for their work on developing hybrid electric drive military vehicles.

NP Aerospace are the Engineering Authority for the MoD Protected Mobility fleet of vehicles, having been awarded the £63 million PMETS contract in 2018. As part of the PMETS framework, the MoD contracts NP Aerospace to deliver ‘non-core tasks’ which vary.

This task was funded by Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) and the aim was to design and develop hybrid electric drive lines for Foxhound and Jackal vehicles. The hybrid electric drive project is focused on developing demonstrators for evaluation by the MoD and is being led by NP Aerospace as the Engineering Authority for the vehicle fleet. General Dynamics Land Systems – UK and Supacat are the partner vehicle OEMS and Magtec is the electric drive and battery technology partner. The project is known as Technology Demonstrator 6 and was contracted in June 2020.

Steve Brown, Director of Programmes, NP Aerospace, said: “NP Aerospace is proud to have delivered this project, leveraging industry collaboration to produce two prototype vehicles that help inform the MoD’s strategic planning.

"The Technology Demonstrator 6 contract also provides a great understanding of what could be achieved across the PMETS vehicle fleet, such as reducing the British Army’s reliance on fossil fuels, a step towards the government’s 2050 net zero goal.”
