QinetiQ has announced the launch of its new ship design and testing capability, International Maritime Consultancy and Software (IMCS), for customers in the commercial sector.

IMCS combines QinetiQ’s naval architecture expertise, its Paramarine ship design software and its state-of-the-art physical testing facilities to provide a comprehensive maritime consultancy. The facilities in Gosport, UK, include Europe’s largest hydrodynamic testing tank, a 270-metre towing tank, and the UK’s only operational cavitation tunnel.

For the first time, commercial customers will be able to take advantage of these facilities, previously available only to European navies and international defence companies.

The capabilities, combined with QinetiQ’s test and evaluation expertise, will offer commercial customers a complete naval architecture service, providing support from concept design, through production and into service, all under one roof.

Vic Vagliani, Director of International Maritime Consultancy and Software at QinetiQ, said: “Our world-class infrastructure and expertise have evolved through our many years acting as a trusted impartial advisor to the Royal Navy. For our customers, conducting their test and evaluation through a single provider simplifies procurement, reduces cost, and guarantees the security of intellectual property.

“Recent high-profile commercial maritime incidents have demonstrated the importance of safety in the design and operation of all vessels, while environmental regulations and the requirement to improve economic efficiency continue to drive the demand to optimise.

“Our facilities, expertise and software are ideally suited to meeting these requirements, so opening them to the commercial market is an exciting opportunity both for us and our prospective customers.”
