Based in London, Darren Carlile (above) brings over 35 years of industry experience including 24 years as a Royal Engineer officer in the British Army. He joins Ramboll from AECOM, where, for the last nine years, he led AECOM’s Defence and National Security Sector. In this role he led the sector’s growth strategy, establishing AECOM as a Tier 1 multidisciplinary engineering services consultancy to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and defence original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) globally and US Visiting Forces in the UK.

Darren’s appointment follows the UK Government’s publication of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) last year, ahead of the eagerly awaited 10-year Defence Investment Plan. Darren will focus on consolidating Ramboll’s ongoing work with Government departments, including the Falkland Islands Government, British Antarctic Survey, FCDO and the MoD. Key growth priorities for Ramboll and Darren will include supporting the US Visiting Forces in the UK, Defence OEM’s, Prime Contractors and other Government departments such as Education and Justice. His remit will also include supporting other nations undertaking research activities in Antarctica.

Ramboll’s Nordic heritage helps position it to support on polar projects, along with its extensive expertise in the area, which has been honed by working alongside the British Antarctic Survey, including on the Rothera Research Station.

Commenting on Darren’s appointment, Jason Layfield, Executive Director – Buildings at Ramboll, said: “Darren’s leadership and depth of experience make him an important addition to Ramboll in the UK and Ireland. We have a strong track record of working with government departments on innovative projects around the world, and I look forward to working with Darren to build on those foundations. In a fast-moving world, we remain committed to ensuring that we have the right expertise and skills to meet our clients’ needs, by targeted senior leadership appointments and strategic acquisitions.”

Darren Carlile, Director, added: “I am delighted to have joined Ramboll. I was already well-aware of their reputation for excellence thanks to my time in industry and I am excited to have the opportunity to contribute my own skills, knowledge and experience to support with further growth. Ramboll’s values-based, purpose-driven approach aligns perfectly with my own, as does their longstanding commitment to the values of the Armed Forces Covenant.

“This is a time of significantly increased Government spending on a range of critical areas including National Security and Defence. Ramboll’s multidisciplinary expertise will stand us in good stead with ensuring that these investments provide a sustainable benefit for both our clients and wider society.”
