Serco to support Air Defence Radar at Portreath

Serco has been awarded a four-year contract by the UK Ministry of Defence to provide engineering support and maintenance of the BAE Systems Air Defence Radar based at Remote Radar Head (RRH) Portreath in Cornwall, following a competitive procurement process.

Under the contract Serco will provide first and second line maintenance for the BAE SYSTEMS T102 primary surveillance radar, and Hensoldt MSSR 2000 I Secondary surveillance radar. Site maintenance covers technical tasks including both the Radar and other Air Battlespace Management/Air Traffic Management equipment.

Commenting on the contract award, Captain Richard McHugh Royal Navy, DE&S Air Defence Windfarm Mitigations Systems Team Leader, said: “This contract is a further commitment to supporting the UK and NATOs air defences ensuring our interests are protected at home and overseas. I am thrilled that we have secured ongoing support to this vital defence asset.”

The new contract adds to Serco’s portfolio of Air Defence Radar support contracts. We have been providing engineering support and through life services to the Royal Air Force’s fleet of T-92 (AN/FPS-117) and TPS-77 Primary Surveillance Radar’s (PSR) at their Remote Radar Head (RRH) sites based at Neatishead, Brizlee Wood, Buchan, Saxa Vord and Benbecula since 2005.

In addition to the Air Defence Radars, we also support ground to air radio and data links as part of the UK Air Surveillance and Control System, in support of the UKs national and NATO air defence.

Portreath
RRH Portreath is an air defence radar station operated by the Royal Air Force in Cornwall, England. The site provides Air Defence Radar coverage for the southwestern approaches to the United Kingdom.
