Serco to support prison infrastructure at Christchurch Men’s Prison

Serco has been selected as the Asset Management and Facilities Management partner – within the Southern Renewal Partners consortium – for the Christchurch Men’s Prison Redevelopment Project.

Serco is playing a critical role in this project, which supports the New Zealand Government’s need for additional capacity and its objective to deliver safe, resilient and fit‑for‑purpose corrections infrastructure.

Over the 25‑year post‑construction period, Serco will deliver integrated asset management and facilities maintenance services to ensure whole‑of‑life performance, reliability and asset availability, supporting the Department of Corrections, who retain responsibility for delivering safe custodial and rehabilitative operations.

How the facility is being redeveloped

The redevelopment includes new accommodation, health and support facilities and associated infrastructure. Serco’s role draws on its extensive local and global experience managing complex, high‑security environments and delivering integrated services that support safe day‑to‑day operations and long‑term value for government.

The Christchurch Men’s Prison project illustrates Serco’s committed support for the New Zealand Government through partnerships, operational excellence and a focus on whole‑of‑life service delivery.

Providing facilities management during the build and post-construction

Serco Asia Pacific Director Facilities Management and Public Private Partnerships, Ben Tracey, said: “Serco has a strong track record supporting correctional infrastructure through long-term partnerships, where asset performance and operational reliability are critical.

“From Auckland South Corrections Facility in New Zealand to Acacia Prison and Clarence Correctional Centre in Australia, we understand the importance and complexity of maintaining assets, facilities and operational environments that support safe day-to-day prison operations and broader correctional and rehabilitative outcomes for government.

”Construction is expected to commence in late 2026 and finish in late 2029, with Serco’s team closely involved throughout the build phase, prior to Asset Management and Facilities Maintenance services commencing when construction is completed.”

Serco also supports the New Zealand Government through its ongoing work in several corrections and defence programmes, including Auckland South Corrections Facility and long‑term support to the New Zealand Defence Force and Royal New Zealand Navy.
