Smiths Detection’s revolutionary hold baggage scanner the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT - which uses X-ray imaging and CT (Computed Tomography) - has been installed at Bremen’s airport, in the first fully operational deployment.

The advanced Explosives Detection System (EDS), launched in 2012, allows the authorities to upgrade checked baggage screening at the airport’s Terminal 3 to the highest ECAC (European Civil Aviation Conference) EDS Standard 3 requirements for the first time.

Hans Zirwes, vice president of international sales at Smiths Detection, said: “The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is ideally suited for the installation at all airports requiring high baggage throughput while lowering operational costs.

"Standard 3 requirements will be mandatory for new EDS equipment at EU airports from September 2014 onwards.”

The XCT, which provides a unique imaging solution based on Smiths Detection’s dual-view, dual-energy, X-ray technology and CT from Analogic Corporation, is the fastest, largest tunnel-sized checked baggage screening system that is EU Standard 3 certified.

With a belt speed of 0.5 meters per second, the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT can screen up to 1800 bags per hour, including objects of up to 100 x 80 cm.

Such a rate means more bags will be automatically screened than with any other comparable systems.
