Located in the departure lounge, the room is the result of a collaboration between the airport team and members of the Airport Accessibility Group (AAG). The room is named after one of Shetland’s most beautiful beaches, which is located close to the airport and features as a print on one of the walls of the room.

“Accessibility for all passengers is a key part of what we offer at Sumburgh Airport,” said Andrew Farquhar, General Manager at Sumburgh Airport.

“Providing an area for people travelling to or from medical appointments, or for anyone requiring a peaceful space, is something we are pleased to offer, and is a great example of how the airport fulfils its role as part of the community.”

Within the room, which has been designed to allow users to enjoy some privacy while they wait for their flight, are sensory toy bags, adaptable lighting, comfortable seating and a television. Some of the furniture and accessories for the room were donated by Sands and Ability Shetland, which is a member of the AAG.

Stephanie Bain, Team Leader at Ability Shetland, said: “This room is a really important addition to the airport, for residents and visitors alike to Shetland as airports can be quite overwhelming for some people with loud noises, bright lights, and bustling crowds.

“By providing this dedicated space, Sumburgh Airport are promoting inclusivity and supporting disabled individuals and their carers to travel more comfortably and confidently so we are very welcoming of this addition by HIAL.”

Marie Pottinger, Chair of Shetland SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity), another contributor to the collaboration, said: “If a parent who is travelling to Aberdeen regarding the loss of their baby is required to travel on a commercial flight rather than Air Ambulance, this room will allow them to have space and privacy from the public before boarding.”
