Volunteers pull together for charity at Southend Airport
Mr Mjeshtri also works for Eddie Stobart at the firm’s warehouse in Bardon, Leicestershire and his friends have promised to help raise £10,000 for Nottingham University’s Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre.
Following the theme of the TV programme, which follows the excitement and challenges facing the legendary haulage giant on Britain’s roads, railways and in the skies, the group of employees chose to pull a truck, train and plane for 100 metres in various locations across the UK.
First up was the team at London Southend Airport, who undertook their gruelling test of muscle and will power on 17 May. Their attempt was generously supported by London Southend Airport based companies Aero Partners and Inflite MRO Services Ltd, who provided the aircraft and board personnel (on-board the plane and on the ground) to make the event a success.
Twenty people, including two intrepid ladies, hauled on giant ropes to pull the BAe RJ85 every agonising millimetre of the distance.
David Lister, Operations Director of London Southend Airport says “When the project in Alfi’s memory was first mooted, we were all really keen to take part and support Halim, his wife Suzanne and the research Nottingham University is conducting. I’m not sure the enormity of pulling a plane without one of our two-trucks really sank in until the guys were looking up at it from the tarmac. Suffice to say, I’m really proud of them. They performed heroics and in the process, raised £2500.”
The remaining challenges are taking place on 28 June with the train being along a section of track at Coalville in Leicestershire and a Stobart truck hauled by hand at Bardon, Leicestershire on 5 July.
