Heathrow Airport recognised at APM Awards 2022

The winners of the annual Association for Project Management (APM) Awards were announced at a live awards ceremony in London yesterday, with Heathrow Airport Ltd being named the winner of the Overall Project of the Year and Engineering, Construction and Infrastructure Project of the Year.

The awards, sponsored by RPC UK Ltd, recognise the very best within the project profession – from project organisations, individuals and projects from across a broad range of sectors across the UK and internationally.

The Overall Project of the Year is the pinnacle of the APM award ceremony and selected at the discretion of the judging panel from the winners of the Technology Project of the Year, Transformation Project of the Year, Engineering, Construction & Infrastructure and Social Project of the Year awards.

With Covid restrictions being lifted, millions of passengers are now coming back to Heathrow Airport. Having a functional and proper firemain system is critical to keep the airport’s passengers and colleagues safe. Heathrow Airport has an extensive firemain system with 115km of pipework across the airport.

The primary purpose is to provide firefighting water to the runway, with the expansion on the network, now it also provides firefighting water to terminals and the businesses/facilities surrounding the airfield.

It was the first time in 70 years, Heathrow had to carry out a full isolation on the firemain system. Coordinating with over 30 internal and external senior business colleagues to execute the contingency plans is a major achievement. The success of this complex and high-risk project is the outcome of an effective governance, strong project leadership and the efforts of the project team.

Nicky Hibbs, Senior Project Manager, Heathrow Ltd, said: “To be shortlisted is a major achievement but to win – twice – is phenomenal.”

Kelly Stone, Head of Airside and Infrastructure Engineering, Heathrow Ltd, said: “We’re speechless. We started this project during the COVID pandemic, in hi-vis and face masks. We worked hard to deliver a successful project in line with our requirements.”

Professor Adam Boddison, chief executive of APM, said: “I would like to congratulate Heathrow Airport on their success in winning these awards, and for their outstanding achievements within the project profession and project delivery.

“Our awards are all about celebrating the outstanding successes of the project profession and I would like to congratulate all of this year’s award winners and finalists for their incredible achievements over the past year.”
