Heathrow UTC handover completed

Bryan Berry, Principal of Heathrow UTC, said: “We are delighted to take ownership of our fantastic new building ahead of time, and all our staff and students are looking forward to opening the doors on 5 January 2015. We’d also like to thank Clearview Homes for providing us with our temporary accommodation, ensuring our students had a great first term.”
BAM Construct, awarded the contract to build the new UTC, entrusted the keys to Principal Bryan Berry, after putting the finishing touches to the 4,500 m² new facilities.
Brian Kelly, from BAM Construct, commented: “There has been a great spirit of collaboration on this project. This incredible achievement comes as a result of hard work from our great team of young site managers.”
The new building includes state of the art engineering workshops promoting the school’s aviation engineering specialism. Students studying at Heathrow UTC receive a high quality, rounded, technical education, studying their GCSE/A Levels alongside a Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Engineering. Specialist engineering workshops sit at the heart of the new facilities with specific areas dedicated to Computer Aided Design and 3D printing, aircraft structures including composites and aero systems engineering.
The building also includes many sustainable features. Carbon emissions will be reduced by 25% against Building Regulation requirements, using a high performing building envelope and photovoltaic panels, which will reduce the overall energy costs for the UTC. Natural light is maximised, rainwater will be collected and used for flushing toilets, and permeable paving will reduce rainwater run-off. Combined with cycle parking and electric vehicle charging points, the facility will achieve a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method).
Heathrow UTC is now recruiting its second cohort for Year 10 and Year 12. Prospective students interested in joining in September 2015 should contact the UTC directly or apply online.
