Mace pledges its continued support for British Armed Forces

Programme and project delivery consultant and construction specialist, Mace, has reaffirmed its commitment to the British Armed Forces and ex-military by resigning the Armed Forces Covenant.

As a Gold signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, Mace actively recruits people choosing to transition from the military to civilian life. The pledge also includes the provision of a bespoke Mace Military Programme, which offers tailored advice and support to service leavers who are considering joining Mace, helping to guide them towards their next adventure. The firm also operates the Military at Mace Network – a dedicated employee resource group that provides informal and sustained support to veterans and Reservists, while also helping to raise funds for armed forces charities.

The event was celebrated at Mace’s global headquarters in London this week, where Mark Reynolds, Mace Group Chair and Chief Executive Officer was joined by Lieutenant General Sir Charlie Stickland CB OBE RM as well as Reservists and ex-military colleagues from across the business.

The skills possessed by people with a military background, which currently number around 300 within the organisation, are exceptional in their standard and scope. As a result, ex-military employees have a significant part to play in the built environment, especially where there are talent gaps.

Mace is responsible for the successful delivery of complex defence and security programmes as well as iconic buildings across the world.

As an example of this, its defence and national security team delivers upgrades and enhancements to the UK’s defence estate, provides dedicated cost and commercial advice for major defence equipment procurements and is at the heart of the infrastructure needed to support the nation’s nuclear deterrent. 

It also involves providing a wide range of fully integrated project and programme management services in growing markets to deliver embassies, airports, research and data centres, working at the forefront of major initiatives in highly secure locations.

Lieutenant General Sir Charlie Stickland CB OBE RM, said: “The commitment made by businesses who sign the Armed Forces Covenant is a vital connection between the Armed Services, business and broader society. 

“There are a number of important facets, not least - it’s key to the integration of veterans into the civilian workforce; reassuring them that their new employer will understand both the unique skills they will provide and the challenges they may face.

“Equally, it’s a powerful message to those who wish to serve as Reservist that they will be supported in their exploits and endeavours by their employer. But also, a strong message that business understands the benefits of Reserve Service and the virtuous circle it creates energising individuals and bringing vibrant skills back into the workplace. 

“It is fantastic that Mace has voluntarily re-signed the pledge – particularly with the natural synergies between the military and the construction sectors - recognising that those with a service background can bring structure, galvanise teams and get stuff done.”
