MAEL inspires next generation of aircraft engineers

Over the past 12 months Monarch Aircraft Engineering (MAEL) has been working with a number of Schools, Scout and Guide groups delivering an initiative hosted by the training delivery team and a number of current apprentices, aimed at engaging and inspiring future generations to consider a career within the sector.

The programme offers a glimpse of aircraft engineering through a number of fun activities which are lead by experienced team members and include practical workshop activities, presentations and tours of the hangar facility in Luton.

Through 2018, Monarch Aircraft Engineering Training Academy (MAETA) has welcomed over 150 young people to learn about the career opportunities within an aircraft engineering facility. In order to tackle the skills gap, MAEL recognises the need for more graduates and apprentices to enter the industry, which is why over the past year the intake onto their aeronautical apprenticeship programme that has been running since 1971 has doubled in size.

Dean Giles, Head of Learning & Development at Monarch Aircraft Engineering said: "To date this initiative has been extremely successful, those attending have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and work with apprentices with many saying that they got so much from the experience. It is all about inspiring the next generation of engineers, by creating these learning opportunities we are supporting young people with essential employability knowledge and skills for the future."

Engineering is the force that drives innovation and change and there is a real shortage of skilled engineers across the whole of the UK but particularly too few females go into engineering. Monarch Aircraft Engineering is proud to be able to work with a diverse range of young people, making them aware of the incredible careers within the sector so that they can start to plan for their futures.
