Seren has just been awarded by the Women’s Engineering Society as one of the 2024 ‘Top 50 Women in Engineering’ and brings valuable insight and experience to her new position as a former employee of the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). She will work with the R&D team to develop more inclusive body armour – a key area of focus within the defence industry. She will accomplish the shared vision of further inclusivity for women in line with the company’s mission, to protect the lives of military and security personnel through best-in-class products and services.

Since graduating from the University of Birmingham in 2018 with an integrated Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Seren has excelled in her work and is determined to inspire women engineers of the future. First enrolling onto the highly competitive Engineering Graduate Scheme within Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) she took on various roles developing new procurement specifications and improving the way body armour is worn by the user. Seren finished her time with the MoD as a Survivability Engineer.

As a Chartered Engineer with a background in aircrew body armour, Seren brings a fresh perspective to her role with NP Aerospace and will continue her work in body armour as a Research and Development Engineer working towards the next generation of more inclusive body armour.

Previously Co-Chair of the Women in Engineering Network (WinE), Seren aims to change the shape of the industry, working with likeminded individuals to ensure that a career in Engineering is an appealing option for young women to consider. In addition to highlighting career options in the industry and opportunities at NP Aerospace for other women, Seren is passionate about improving body armour equipment for women. Seren’s vision for the future perfectly aligns with NP Aerospace and their on-going commitment to supporting women in the military.

On her move to NP Aerospace Seren said: “I was feeling ready for a new challenge in my career and having worked with NP Aerospace in a previous role and only ever seeing the highest standard of engineering practice, I didn’t think twice about applying when the opportunity presented itself. I want more women to choose a career in engineering and perhaps more importantly, stay in engineering. For those things to happen, engineering must be an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone. By being a little more visible in my career, I hope I can inspire the next generation of women engineers.”

With the number of women serving in the military growing year on year, more than 20% in many countries, NP Aerospace recognise the importance of investing in the development of inclusive armour. Director of Development at NP Aerospace and former Coventry University Engineering graduate Mike Sandercott, said: “Our armour technology combines maximum protection with class-leading ergonomic performance and we are committed to continually evolving our product ranges to best serve all who depend on it. We are a graduate friendly employer with various opportunities available, particularly within Engineering and we don’t underestimate the role future graduates will play in the success of the work that we do.”
