Primary schools invited to take RAF Glider Challenge

Primary schools across the UK are being invited to join a half-day virtual STEM workshop, free of charge.

The event, provided through a collaboration between the STEM education charity, The Smallpeice Trust and the RAF is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils, aged between 9-11.

During the workshop the students will use equipment provided by The Smallpeice Trust and funded by the RAF, to explore the science of flight by designing and building three gliders, each with a unique design and shape and using different materials.

Hosted by a team of education officers, students will be guided through the engineering cycle of planning, creating, testing and improving.

The workshop will cover several areas of the Year 4, 5 and 6 curriculum, as children develop their flight related vocabulary, use problem solving to measure and analyse the flight of their gliders, determine ways to increase the distance of flight and consider how the shape of a glider impacts the speed.
