Smiths Detection's new baggage scanner gains key EU approval

Smiths Detection announced today that its revolutionary new scanner for screening checked airport baggage has been tested under the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) Common Evaluation Programme (CEP) and met the EU's EDS (Explosives Detection Systems) Standard 3, required for all new EDS aviation applications from September 2014 onwards.

The newly launched HI-SCAN 10080 XCT, developed in cooperation with Analogic Corporation (Nasdaq: ALOG), uses Smiths Detection’s expertise in multi-energy x-ray technology coupled with Analogic’s expertise in three-dimensional Computed Tomography (CT).

The high-speed system gained EU Standard 3 approval while operating at a belt speed of 0.5 metres per second, enabling it to handle between 1500 to 1800 bags per hour. Its large tunnel size permits bags of 100 x 80 centimetres to be screened and, combined with the high belt speed, offers great potential for initial hardware and operational cost savings.

Mal Maginnis (above), President of Smiths Detection, said: “This next generation scanner is the fastest and most efficient baggage screening system now available to airport operators. The milestone EU approval reinforces our position as the world leader in advanced scanning and trace-detection equipment.”
