UK secures access to Ukraine’s Avengers AI Labs in major defence technology agreement with Kyiv

Ukraine has given the UK access to a "goldmine" of battlefield data that could help shape the next generation of UK defence and security technologies.

The UK government has announced that a landmark AI deal between the UK and Ukraine was signed yesterday as the countries deepen cooperation to develop new military capabilities and technology. It comes as the UK approved the transfer of Storm Shadow missile technology to Ukraine.

Both deals were signed off by Prime Minister Andy Burnham with Zelensky as Burnham visited Kyiv. The new platform provides real-world data and insights used to train AI models.

The new agreement will combine the UK’s AI ecosystem with Ukraine’s operational experience, technological innovation, and engineering talent. The relationship is presented as mutually beneficial, as the UK will be granted access to “Ukraine’s coveted Avengers AI Labs database.”

The UK will provide Ukraine with universities, researchers, technology companies, and the “third-largest AI ecosystem in the world.”

A second project will see the UK and Ukraine explore the development of next-generation low-power AI chips designed to power future drones, robotics and autonomous systems.

Ukraine’s much-coveted Avengers Lab

The Avengers Lab is fed immense amounts of data from thousands of battlefield daylight cameras and infrared sensors, and the UK is set to be the first country to get access to it. That data has millions of objects such as tanks, artillery, air defence systems, infantry, and aerial targets, including Shahed drones.

Euromaiden Press writes, “A system trained on Avengers data is already in the field, analyzing over 100,000 drone video streams a month and detecting about 70% of enemy targets in real time, day and night.”

The government has called it a “goldmine of battlefield data”.

The UK government suggests that the potential of these Avengers Lab-trained AI models extends beyond the battlefield. It could “revolutionise all parts of public life” including air traffic control and trains. But first the focus will be on defence and national security.

UK aid to Ukraine is far from unidirectional. It is enabling the UK to build a large and battle-tested drone defence base, modernize its forces using real-life battlefield data, and much more. The new project uses Ukrainian battlefield data with UK technology.

Partnership to better protect UK’s critical infrastructure

Yesterday, Andy Burnham said in Kyiv, “Ukraine has become one of the world’s leading innovators in defence technology, forged through courage, ingenuity and the hard lessons of war.”

He hailed the partnerships as united Ukriane’s “unrivalled operational experience” with the UK’s AI ecosystem, enabling the two countries to develop the technologies of the future together. It will turn buried fibre-optic cables into a giant AI-enabled sensor.

Burnham said it will change lives in Britain while saving lives in Ukraine. The UK hopes to use it to better protect the country’s critical infrastructure.

Potential use cases include protecting UK bases from protestors and protecting the UK from hostile actors trying to gain intelligence. The government stipulates, “As well as military bases, the technology could be rolled out to protect airports, prisons and even railways and energy plants in the future.”

Several pilot projects have already been rolled out with three British startups, namely Bristol’s Sintela, Oxford’s Mind Foundry and London’s Skyral.

The deal is part of the UK and Ukraine’s 100 Year Partnership and is part of a much larger network of bilateral cooperation initiatives.
