UK joins NATO initiative to explore multinational Airbus A400M airlift fleet
The UK has joined six other NATO nations in launching a new multinational initiative to explore a shared fleet of Airbus A400M military transport aircraft to strengthen Europe’s strategic airlift capabilities.
Announced during the NATO Summit Defence Forum in Ankara, Türkiye, the High Visibility Project brings together Belgium, Croatia, France, Poland, Spain, Türkiye and the United Kingdom. The initiative is modelled on NATO’s successful Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF) programme and could lead to a multinationally owned and operated fleet of Airbus A400M aircraft.
Shared fleet aims to close NATO airlift gaps
The project would address strategic airlift capability gaps among European allies by adopting a “pooling and sharing” approach. Participating nations will examine different levels of cooperation, from shared aircraft ownership to joint maintenance, training, infrastructure and procurement.
The long-term objective is to create an end-to-end air mobility capability that provides participating nations with greater operational flexibility while reducing costs through common support and interoperability.

The proposed multinational A400M fleet would support a variety of missions, including:
- Strategic and tactical airlift
- Air-to-air refuelling
- Medical evacuation (MEDEVAC)
- Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief
- Wildfire firefighting operations
For the UK, which already operates 22 A400M Atlas aircraft with the Royal Air Force, participation could further improve interoperability with European allies while helping maximise fleet availability and sustainment.
Airbus highlights A400M’s growing NATO role
Airbus welcomed the initiative, noting the aircraft’s expanding role among NATO members across Europe.
“The selection of the A400M for this multinational fleet underlines its key strategic airlift capabilities,” said Ben Bridge, Chairman of Airbus Defence and Space UK. “With more than 135 aircraft in operation and more than 270,000 flight hours achieved by the global fleet, the A400M has become the backbone of Air Mobility for the largest European NATO countries, and with its future capability roadmap, its role will become even more essential for decades to come.”

The Airbus A400M Atlas bridges the gap between smaller tactical transports, such as the C-130 Hercules, and larger strategic airlifters, such as the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. It can carry heavy military equipment over intercontinental distances while also operating from short, unprepared airstrips.
The aircraft can also function as an aerial refuelling tanker for both fast jets and helicopters, giving operators greater mission flexibility.
Modelled on NATO’s successful MRTT programme
The proposed A400M fleet takes inspiration from NATO’s Multinational MRTT Fleet, one of Europe’s most successful examples of shared military aviation capability.
Operating since 2020, the programme allows participating nations to jointly own and operate Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft rather than maintaining separate national fleets.

The pooled approach delivers lower operating costs, common training and maintenance, and ensures aircraft are available to participating nations when required.
To date, the MMF has:
- Deployed aircraft to NATO’s eastern flank
- Supported civilian and refugee evacuations from Afghanistan
- Participated in multinational exercises in the Indo-Pacific
- Built a fleet of nine operational A330 MRTTs from an eventual total of 12 aircraft
The new A400M initiative is in its early planning stages. However, its launch signals growing interest among NATO members in expanding the successful multinational fleet model.
