magniX is expanding beyond electric aerospace by applying its batteries, power electronics and motor-generator technology to mission-critical energy applications.

The company, which develops electric powertrains for aircraft, said it will broaden its applications into sectors including defence, space, data centres, mobility and energy storage.

magniX said the move builds on technology originally developed for aerospace certification, including its Samson batteries, magniDrive power electronics, PDX800 power distribution units and electric engines.

The company said its electric engines have powered more than 200 flights across six different airframes, while its wider product line is designed around an 800-volt architecture.

Aerospace technology for mission-critical energy

magniX said its batteries, inverters and power distribution systems are designed to meet demanding aerospace standards for performance, reliability, energy density, cycle life and safety.

The company now plans to apply those technologies to critical energy storage and power generation applications where reliability is central to operational performance. Potential markets include data centres, mobility, defence and space, where demand for resilient electric power systems is growing.

Neil Perry, executive chairman of magniX, said: “The world is experiencing a rapid buildout in electricity systems thanks to the rise of data centres and advances in the space, defence, and mobility industries. magniX has the technology and products that can address all of these opportunities.”

magniX to continue electric aircraft work

magniX said it remains committed to electric aviation, where it continues to develop fully integrated powertrains for aircraft. The company is also working towards the first flight of the Bye Aerospace eFlyer 2 powered by Samson batteries.

Reed Macdonald, chief executive of magniX, said the move beyond aerospace marked “a pivotal moment” for the company. He said: “By applying aerospace standards of product performance and reliability to new use cases, we can increase magniX’s impact and build a world-scale company.”

The company also announced changes to its board governance. Neil Perry, head of Clermont Capital, has joined magniX as executive chairman. Sean Gardiner, managing director at Clermont Capital, has become executive director at magniX.

magniX is headquartered in Everett, Washington, and develops batteries, power electronics and electric engines for aerospace and other critical energy applications.
