British Airways chooses Pratt & Whitney engines for next A320neo fleet
British Airways has selected Pratt & Whitney GTF engines to power its next batch of Airbus A320neo-family aircraft as the UK flag carrier continues renewing its short-haul fleet.
Announced on the opening day of the Farnborough International Airshow, the agreement covers 33 firm aircraft and 30 options. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027.
Pratt & Whitney will also maintain the engines through a 12-year EngineWise Comprehensive service agreement, covering long-term fleet efficiency and engine support.
New engine choice for British Airways
The selection marks a change for British Airways, whose existing A320neo and A321neo aircraft are powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines.
British Airways currently operates 33 A320neos, meaning the new agreement will introduce Pratt & Whitney’s geared turbofan architecture into its latest-generation narrowbody fleet.
Rick Deurloo, president of commercial engines at Pratt & Whitney, said the decision represented a “strong vote of confidence” in the GTF programme.

The manufacturer says the engine reduces fuel consumption by 20% and produces a 75% smaller noise footprint than previous-generation powerplants.
Its upgraded GTF Advantage engine is expected to enter service later in 2026, offering increased range and improved durability, including up to twice the time on wing.
More than 2,800 GTF-powered aircraft are currently operated by over 90 customers worldwide, with Pratt & Whitney reporting a backlog of more than 8,000 engines.
The agreement is not a fresh order for 63 Airbus aircraft, but an engine selection covering aircraft already included in British Airways’ fleet plans.
It nevertheless represents a major Farnborough win for RTX and an important step in British Airways’ investment in newer, quieter and more fuel-efficient short-haul aircraft.
