Ineos expands Team Grenadier for £2bn British Army Land Rover replacement
Ineos Automotive has added two British supply-chain specialists to the consortium offering the Grenadier as the foundation of the UK Armed Forces’ next generation of light vehicles.
Hobson Industries and TVS Supply Chain Solutions have joined Ineos Automotive, NMS UK and SMT Defence in Team Grenadier, strengthening the consortium’s UK industrial and support offering as it pursues the Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) programme.
The competition could eventually cover more than 9,500 vehicles and is expected to be worth approximately £2.5 billion including VAT, or £2 billion ex-VAT. The MoD is seeking a common platform capable of replacing roles currently performed by ageing fleets including the Land Rover and Pinzgauer.

The initial contract is expected to run from May 2027 until May 2036, with options potentially extending the programme to 2047. The final number of vehicles will remain flexible so the Armed Forces can respond to changing operational requirements and emerging technology.
Grenadier pitched for nine military roles
Team Grenadier is proposing militarised versions of the Grenadier and Quartermaster as the common base for all nine LMV variants.
These include general-purpose, battlefield ambulance, tactical mobility, troop-carrying and enhanced-protection vehicles. Adopting a common vehicle family could reduce the complexity of training, maintenance and spare-parts support across the Joint Force.
Ineos argues that the Grenadier’s ladder-frame chassis, permanent four-wheel drive, beam axles and payload capacity provide a durable starting point for the required military modifications.

The company has built more than 40,000 Grenadiers since production began. Vehicles from the family have also been selected for specialist police and border-security applications in Europe, although Team Grenadier will need to demonstrate that the platform can meet the British military’s more demanding protection, payload and integration requirements.
Hobson Industries brings experience in military vehicle remanufacturing and through-life support, while TVS Supply Chain Solutions adds logistics, parts distribution and fleet-support capabilities.
Six contenders target Land Rover replacement
Team Grenadier faces competition from five other known contenders, each combining an established vehicle platform with varying levels of UK engineering, manufacturing and support.
General Dynamics Land Systems UK, Ford and Ricardo are developing an offer based on Ford vehicles. The consortium is proposing UK conversion and integration work, supported by Ford’s engine manufacturing operation at Dagenham and facilities in South Wales.
Babcock and Supacat are offering the General Logistics Vehicle family, based on the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series. Babcock says its proposal would retain around 70% of the programme’s value in the UK, with work centred on its Devonport facility and Supacat’s operations in Honiton.

Jaguar Land Rover is seeking to continue its historic association with the British Army through the Defender Wolf Series II. The Defender is engineered in Britain and uses engines manufactured in Wolverhampton, although final vehicle assembly currently takes place in Slovakia.
Rheinmetall UK is proposing a solution based on the military Mercedes-Benz G-Class family, with UK facilities expected to support modification and integration.
Team LionStrike, comprising GM Defense, BAE Systems and NP Aerospace, is offering vehicles derived from the Chevrolet Colorado and GM Defense Infantry Squad Vehicle. Its proposal combines an established US platform with military adaptation, integration and support work in the UK.
The competition follows the beginning of the British military’s Land Rover retirement after more than 70 years of service. The first LMV vehicles are expected to reach personnel by 2030.
