Microchip manufacturer NVIDIA has announced a donation of $250m of computing capacity valued at $250m to support UK research into AI safety and security.

Announced on 13th October 2026, the sum will be spent over the next five years at a rate of $50m per year and used to allow leading centres, including the University of Oxford’s British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD) project, to utilise capacity in NVIDIA’s compute to test agents and develop strategies.

The funding was announced during NVIDIA co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang’s visit to the UK as part of a wider European tour, which also included investment announcements in France and Germany. Computing capacity would be provided through UK-based data centres, with the final terms still to be negotiated.

“The UK brings world-class scientific rigour to this essential engineering challenge,” said Huang. “With this $250m commitment, NVIDIA will put accelerated computing in the hands of UK researchers to develop, test and strengthen safeguards for increasingly powerful AI. This is how the UK turns research leadership into real-world solutions — and scientific progress into a future that benefits everyone.”

UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan added: “This commitment is a vote of confidence in our world-leading strength and expertise in AI research — and, in particular, frontier AI safety that is becoming ever more important as AI’s capabilities develop.”

Other institutions set to benefit from the funding include the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR) run by University College London, with funding also provided to Imperial College London.

AI raises security concerns

As the pace of AI advances accelerates, concerns have been mounting about the dangers of the technology in areas such as how it could be abused to develop new weapons.

In September 2026, King Charles III issued a warning to the CEOs of leading AI developers, including NVIDIA, that the technology could pose an ‘existential danger’ to humanity and that humans must remain in control of its development.

The UK has long sought to position itself at the centre of AI safety, hosting a summit on the subject in November 2023 and also being home to the world’s first AI Security institute.

Executives from the institutions using the compute capacity praised the capabilities it will give them to advance their work, and Kanishka emphasised that AI safety will be a key theme of the UK’s G20 Presidency in 2027.

NVIDIA invests in UK tech startups

Separately, NVIDIA has announced plans to take minority stakes in five UK tech startups.

The planned investments in Foresight, Boltz, Hiverge, Prima Mente and Riverlane build on NVIDIA’s earlier investment in the country and were also announced on 13 October.

These companies operate from London to Cambridge and cover sectors including AI, healthcare, quantum technology, and renewable energy.

However, during his visit, Huang issued criticism of the UK, stating that although the country has world-leading traits for developing AI, it lacks a risk-taking culture, which would be key for it to fulfil its potential.
