UK startup developing 400-mile military cargo drone secures $10 million investment

The funding will support development of the hybrid propulsion system for Skyfly's Longbow electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft.

UK aviation startup Skyfly Technologies has secured $10 million in investment led by HICO Investment Group to accelerate development of Longbow, a hybrid-electric unmanned aircraft designed for long-range military cargo transport and other defence applications. The investment also includes participation from defence technology investor Archangel and will help the company advance its ambitions in both civilian and military aviation.

Longbow is being developed to combine vertical take-off and landing capability with the efficiency of fixed-wing flight, enabling it to operate without conventional runways while carrying substantial payloads over long distances.

Hybrid-electric drone targets military logistics

Skyfly’s proposed Longbow aircraft is designed to achieve a range exceeding 400 miles (640km) while carrying a payload of up to 200kg. These capabilities could make it suitable for military logistics missions where conventional transport aircraft are impractical, particularly in remote areas or locations with limited infrastructure.

Potential applications include delivering ammunition, equipment, food, and medical supplies to forward operating bases, as well as supporting ship-to-shore resupply operations. By transporting cargo without an onboard crew, the aircraft could also reduce personnel exposure in hazardous or contested environments.

The aircraft’s vertical take-off and landing capability could allow it to operate from temporary landing sites, austere military installations, and suitable maritime platforms. Its intended combination of range and payload would place it in a different operational category from smaller multirotor drones typically used for short-range reconnaissance or light deliveries.

Investment advances hybrid propulsion technology

The $10 million funding round, led by HICO Investment Group, will help Skyfly advance the hybrid propulsion technology underpinning Longbow. The company is also continuing development of its Axe aircraft, a piloted electric eVTOL designed for personal aviation.

While the Axe relies on electric propulsion, Longbow is being developed with a hybrid system intended to extend endurance and range beyond the practical limits of a battery-only configuration.

The underlying aircraft architecture uses eight fixed-angle motors and wings to support vertical flight and efficient forward travel, avoiding the mechanical complexity of tilting propulsion units. Skyfly believes this approach could offer benefits in terms of simplicity, maintenance and operational reliability.

For defence customers, these characteristics could be important in reducing support requirements and improving aircraft availability, particularly when operating from locations where maintenance facilities and spare parts are limited.

Potential role in future military operations

Longbow is being developed for a range of potential defence missions, including cargo resupply, intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR), and medical evacuation support.

The ability to transport up to 200kg over a planned range of more than 400 miles could make it particularly useful for sustaining isolated military units or moving supplies between dispersed operating locations. Its proposed maritime applications could also support resupply operations between ships and shore installations.

Skyfly has been enrolled in the UK Ministry of Defence’s heavy-lift challenge, providing a potential route for its technology to be evaluated against military requirements.

However, the aircraft’s published range and payload figures remain target capabilities rather than confirmation of a fully operational military system. Further development and testing will be required to establish its performance, autonomy, communications resilience and suitability for deployment in demanding environments.

UK manufacturing ambitions

Skyfly intends to manufacture both the Axe and Longbow at its 10,000-square-foot UK production and assembly facility. The new investment is expected to help accelerate development and support the company’s plans to bring its aircraft technology closer to commercial and defence markets.

The funding highlights growing investor interest in uncrewed aircraft that can move meaningful payloads rather than simply collect intelligence. If Longbow meets its intended performance targets, it could provide military operators with a runway-independent cargo platform offering a combination of long range, useful payload capacity and reduced risk to aircrew.

For Skyfly, the challenge now is to translate its proposed capabilities into a dependable, affordable and operationally proven aircraft that meets the demands of military logistics.
