Brazilian Navy selects Paramarine ship design for support boats

Paramarine advanced marine design software, developed by QinetiQ GRC, has been selected by the Brazilian Navy for use in the design of a specialist offshore support vessel on behalf of Petrobras, the Brazilian national oil company.

The eventual fleet of boats will be used to service Petrobras’s extensive offshore oil fields.

With the largest navy in Latin America, with over 100 vessels - including an aircraft carrier - with many more in construction including nuclear submarines, the Brazilian Navy also has more than 60,000 personnel and significant in-house naval architecture capabilities (some of whom recently attended an intensive two week Paramarine training programme in the UK).

Lt. Cmdr. Rafael Castelo Branco Goulart, Centro de Projeto de Navios, Brazilian Navy said of the award of the contract: “Following an extensive review of the market we believe that the Brazilian Navy has purchased in Paramarine the best tool available on the market today for the design of a high speed offshore support vessel to meet the needs of Petrobras.

“The extensive and sophisticated capabilities of Paramarine including its ease of use and fast manipulation and calculation of data make it ideal for the design and certification of vessels. The training we have received in support of our deployment has been first class, delivered by highly qualified and experienced naval architects at QinetiQ GRC. We would strongly recommend Paramarine to organisations looking for a powerful software tool to support the design and development of specialist vessels. “

Paramarine is based on over 20 years’ experience in commercial and defence marine design. Thousands of concept vessels have been modelled and their stability analysed using Paramarine. It is used by many of the world’s leading shipbuilders and ship designers, as well as some of the leading universities including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University College London. Paramarine is also used by 5 of the world’s top 10 submarine builders along with warship builders to design and analyse new build naval vessels. Its advanced design capabilities are built upon the Siemens PLM ParasolidTM solid modeller, which provides much of the geometric detail required to enable the accurate analytical capabilities, as well as providing excellent geometric exchange with other CAD systems such as NX and Foran.

Vittorio Vagliani, managing director, QinetiQ GRC said: “We are very pleased to be continuing to develop our relationship with the Brazilian Navy. The use of Paramarine to design a high speed offshore support vessel builds on top of their recent selection of our software to support design work on a fleet of new Brazilian submarines.”
