The inaugural episode explores the refresh of the Defence Command Paper, with insights extending to the Integrated Review Refresh as well as how the ongoing war in Ukraine is changing the landscape of UK defence. In addition, the importance of integration between Government, the Ministry of Defence and industry as the UK strengthens its defence and security industrial base is highlighted.

Commenting on the episode, Dr Robert Johnson, Director, at the Secretary of State’s Office for Net Assessment and Challenge, said: "The UK is a secure, responsible, major nuclear power of the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council but it faces multiple threats and we are all affected: Russia’s war has increased energy costs and hence the cost of living, wars push refugees to our shores, while instability drives up inflation. How does the UK secure and retain its global, competitive advantage? And what is the contribution made by defence?"

The podcast, Defence Talks: Securing UK Advantage, explores the key themes in British defence in the context of an increasingly contested international security environment. It will consider how the UK can shape the international agenda, focusing on how technology, innovation, skills, and defence strategies help to advance Britain’s interests, as well as those of its key allies and partners.

Forthcoming episodes will focus on greater diversity in the Armed Forces, the relationship between UK society and the military, ESG and the Global Combat Air Programme, with further episodes planned.
